New Jersey State Council on the Arts Awards 2007 Artist Fellowships
(Trenton, NJ) The New Jersey State Council on the Arts announced the award of 2007 Artist Fellowships totaling $226,500. In this highly competitive program thirty two New Jersey artists were selected from an applicant pool of 475. The work samples of all applicants were reviewed and evaluated by independent panels of their peers on the sole criterion of artistic quality. These 32 artists represented in the estimation of those panels the very highest standards of excellence with one artist, Kevin Caruso of Matawan, receiving a prestigious, but rare, perfect score. Fellowships are one of several ways that the Council supports the professional development of artists and honors their achievements.
“Artists are the life-blood of our industry and creative capital of our state,” said Carol Herbert, Council Chair. “Encouraging their development and new work ultimately benefits us all.” The 2007 Fellowship recipients are:

In addition to the award of Fellowships, the Council received reports of the Arts Education, Executive, Planning, Public Value and Grants Committees and approved modifications to the Cultural Trust Arts Institutional and Financial Stabilization Program. It also took action to reallocate $45,000 received from the New Jersey Division of the Deaf and Hard of Hearing to the New Jersey Theatre Alliance and the Cultural Access Network of New Jersey to provide open captioning services at performances in New Jersey Theatres.
During the meeting devoted to the value of professional artists and the importance of their work, David Miller, Executive Director of the State Arts Council, gave an overview of the Council’s programs of support and service to artists. He also praised New Jersey artists for their vast achievements and for making our state proud of its nationally acclaimed artistic community. The Council also received a presentation by Sean Elwood, Director of Grant Making and Artists’ Services at Creative Capital, Inc., who outlined funding opportunities available to artists at Creative Capital as well as other avenues artists can pursue in the their search for financial support.
Following a brief break for lunch, the Arts Council convened the 10th Annual Artists Roundtable to explore issues particularly significant to New Jersey artists including legal services, artist live/work space, health insurance and funding opportunities for artists in all disciplines. A series of workshops were led by experts in the field that included Tracy Batt, New Jersey Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts; Joe Benincasa and Jim Brown, the Actor’s Fund; Linwood Oglesby, Newark Arts Council; Maria Gillan, Passaic County Cultural & Heritage Commission; Judy Wukitsch, South Orange Department of Recreation & Culture; Patrick Morrissy, Housing And Neighborhood Development Services (HAND); Paul Sullivan, Pro Arts, Jersey City; and Sean Elwood, Creative Capital, Inc.
