American Masterpieces Series Underway throughout New Jersey
State Arts Council Participates in National Initiative to Showcase America's Artistic Legacy

(Trenton, NJ) Arts events across New Jersey have been designated by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts to be included in the series American Masterpieces: Three Centuries of Artistic Genius. American Masterpieces is an initiative designed by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to bring the best of America’s cultural and artistic legacy to communities across the country. “Our artistic and cultural heritage defines us as a nation and as individuals and it is incumbent upon is to conserve it, to celebrate it and to help it thrive,” said Dana Gioia, the chairman of the NEA.

The 2008-2009 New Jersey season of American Masterpieces represents diverse artists and disciplines including dance, music, theatre and visual arts in locations throughout the state. All of the events feature work by an American Master and range from classics with international acclaim to contemporary expressions that pay homage to master artists of yesterday and today. The series is being marketed through the Discover Jersey Arts program with a variety of print, radio and internet promotions to assure the widest possible audience is aware of the opportunities to experience these significant artists and works.

“Through the support of the NEA, the American Masterpieces series provides access to some of the greatest American artists and works right here in our local communities. The Arts Council is proud to participate in this national initiative with the NEA and in partnership with organizations all around New Jersey,” said the Arts Council Executive Director Steve Runk.
