Cultural Planning
Cultural planning, particularly on a community level, is an important way to help assure two things: that the arts receive the support and priority they deserve and that the full array of benefits they provide can be put to work in building strong communities. Cultural Planning can take many forms and be directed in many ways, but almost always begins with an inventory of cultural resources to discover what already exists and all the ways those assets are and can be connected. This of course includes artists and arts groups, but also extends widely into the cultural attributes of the community, its architecture, landmarks, civic activities, diverse communities and traditions, parks, and the design features of most everything. Our experience is that rigorous and highly inclusive planning processes with goals and objectives that are formally adopted or integrated to municipal plans and development strategies are most effective in leading to positive results.

The State Council on the Arts encourages communities everywhere to engage in Cultural Planning as a means of improving civic life and we provide funding to enable it. In this room we will provide information intended to help you engage in this work.
