The studies are done; the results are clear; the message is compelling. The arts are a powerful contributor to the economic vitality of our state and essential to our well being.
It's not just the $1.5 billion in economic activity they generate each year. When our theatres and concert halls are open, the restaurants are jumping. The arts bring people to our downtowns at times when they otherwise would not. They increase business occupancy rates and improve property values. They are the hallmark of good schools, and good schools are among the highest priorities of real estate shoppers. The cultural opportunities in a region are among the biggest reasons why corporations locate, stay and expand. The arts mean jobs and good ones. They give our towns identity and character on which to grow. They engage our citizenry in unique and powerful ways that teach tolerance and cultural understanding, build pride in ourselves and our communities, and celebrate, commemorate and memorialize our greatest accomplishments and most treasured values.
In this room we will provide information that can be helpful to those who wish to further explore the issues that surround how the arts and culture can be used to foster economic growth and community development.
